Does My Baby Need Probiotics? [Best Probiotics for Baby]

Does My Baby Need Probiotics

When it comes to baby tummy troubles, I’ve had more than my fair share of experience. Colton had severe reflux as a baby, and Blair is struggling with colic. As a mom, it’s so frustrating to see them in pain and not know how to fix it.

Not to mention, colic is rough on mama, too! Sometimes I just need to sleep, you know?

While researching ways to relieve colic in babies, I came across infant probiotics. I wondered, does my baby need probiotics? B.infantis is an infant probiotic strain, and here’s where it gets interesting:

97% of North American babies are born without B.infantis in their microbiome.

Why?

The answer, in short, is modern medicine. Due to medical breakthroughs like c-sections and antibiotics, the mom-baby transfer of B.infantis has been interrupted.

If you’re wondering “does my baby need probiotics?”, consider this: since this good bacteria has gone missing from babies’ guts, there has been a dramatic rise in allergic conditions [like dermatitis and food allergies], autoimmune conditions [like diabetes], and metabolic conditions [like obesity] in children.

B.infantis is a good bacteria that minimizes potentially harmful ones linked to a higher risk for conditions like colic, eczema, allergies, obesity, and diabetes.

What can you do?

Use an over-the-counter infant probiotic to introduce B.infantis to your baby. We’re using Evivo probiotic for Blair because it is the only probiotic clinically proven to restore Baby’s gut microbiome to its original, natural state.

Best of all, Evivo is super easy to use. All you do is mix one sachet of Evivo powder with 3-5mL of breastmilk and feed it to your baby with a syringe. So simple, even a sleep-deprived mama can handle it! Trust me, I would know.

How does it work?

Breastmilk contains nutrients called Human Milk Oligosaccharides [HMOs], which feed B.infantis. In return, B.infantis transforms the HMOs into nutrition for Baby.

Without good bacteria in Baby’s gut, 15% of the key nutrients in breastmilk are wasted. Ask any nursing mama, breastmilk and wasted are two words you don’t want to hear in the same sentence! Breastfeeding is hard work, and I want to be sure Blair is getting as much benefit from it as possible.

I explain the whole process in this short video demonstrating how to use Evivo:

Why not give your baby the best possible start?

If good gut bacteria are thriving before a baby is weaned from breastmilk, they’re more likely to develop a healthy metabolism and immune system later in life.

I’ve been lucky to be able to breastfeed both of my babies, and I’m excited about this new discovery during my breastfeeding journey with Blair. I already knew about the health benefits of breastfeeding, but now I know she’s getting the most benefits from my milk as possible. And that makes me one proud mama.

  1. I didn’t know that about the wasting of good breastmilk. Really interesting to read. Thanks for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday

    1. Thanks so much, Lisa! I didn’t know about that either until I started researching Evivo!

  2. I had no idea baby probiotics existed! I would be inclined to give them to mine as I take them myself and find them quite beneficial. Would these be appropriate for 6 and 9 year olds? Mine are no longer babies.

    1. Unfortunately, this Evivo probiotic is only for babies because it requires mixing with breastmilk. However, there are lots of great probiotics out there for older kids! I give my 2-year-old the Smarty Pants brand. They’re gummies and he really likes the taste.
